        1.  John1 Pound was born Abt. 1660 in England?, and died February 21, 1690/91 in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., New Jersey.  He married (1) Esther ? Abt. 1681.    He married (2) Winifred ? Abt. 1684 in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., New Jersey. 

 

Notes for John Pound:

     The origin of John Pound of Piscataway, New Jersey is as yet unknown although many traditions have come down to the present. He came to New Jersey from New York, according to his first deed.  One story says that he was one of three brothers who came from Yorkshire, England. It is known that members of the Pound Family lived in several south English counties but few Pounds are known in the Yorkshire area.

     John Pound is first mentioned in the records when his daughter Mary was born in 1682.  In 1684-5 he is listed as a quit renter in Woodbridge, New Jersey on 300 acres. He helped take the inventory of the estate of Francis Drake dated December 10, 1683.

     He served on a jury in the court at Piscataway in 1684. He purchased property from Reni La Flower in 1683 in Piscataway. As of September 17, 1686 he was a resident of Piscataway when Hopewell Hull and George Drake were "chosen to make ye bridge att John Pounds." On August 20, 1688 he was a witness at the wedding of James Creek and Frances Churcher in Burlington County. He died in Piscataway on February 21 , 1690/91 according to town records. John's first wife was named Esther. She was the mother of his daughter Mary. He later married Winnifred, maiden name unknown, who was the mother of his son John. Following his death his widow married Robert Rorey on October 15, 1691 at Piscataway. They had a daughter Agnes Rorey, who was born January 18, 1693/4. Her second husband died November 10, 1694 in Piscataway. On April 11, 1696 she bought approximately 122 acres from Hezekiah Bonam for 10 pounds, four shillings. When she died, her eldest son John Pound inherited the property.

        3.  John2 Pound (John1) was born Abt. 1685 in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., New Jersey, and died 1752 in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., New Jersey.  He married Esther ? 1707 in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., New Jersey.  She was born Abt. 1687 in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., New Jersey.

 

Notes for John Pound:

     John Pound Jr. was born in Piscataway or Woodbridge, New Jersey about 1685 but lived in Piscataway all his life, He was a farmer by trade and also had livestock. His first appearance in the official records was when he was granted an earmark to identify his livestock on May 139 1707 by the Piscataway town clerk. He inherited 1,20 acres of land in Piscataway from his mother when she died and in May 1718 purchased another 100 acres from John Harrison of Somerset County, New Jersey. He also bought 28 1/2 acres from John Parker in January 1724. Possibly following the death of his wife he sold 100 acres of property to his eldest son Thomas for ten shillings on March 24, 1736. on February 23, 1738 he sold the rest of his property, about 48 1/2 acres to his third son Elijah Pound, In 1715 he served in the Piscataway militia under the command of Colonel Thomas Farmer. He was listed as a freeholder in Piscataway in 1748 and 1750. In 1748/49 he was one of the witnesses to the will of Joan LeForge. In 1712 he served as the constable of Piscataway. John Pound died between May 2, 1752, when he wrote his will, and August 26, 1752, when the will was proven. At the time he wrote his will he owned no real estate.  He left legacies to his four sons and also to Rachel, wife of John LeForge, not stating whether or not she was related. John Pounds wife was named Esther but her maiden name is not known. At his death John Pound left an estate valued at 419 pounds, 16 shillings and two pence.

Notes for John Pound:

     John Pound Jr. was born about 1710 in Piscataway, New Jersey and lived there at least until 1757. He first appears in the records when he and Philip Drake purchased property in Piscataway from Evan Drummond and James Alexander on May 17, 1736. On January 19, 1750/51 he was granted an earmark to identify his livestock by the town clerk of Piscataway. He was listed as a bondsman in the estate of David Drake on February 7, 1746, His earmark was awarded to Jacob Dunn on March 29, 1757 so John Pound had left Piscataway by then. On August 25, 1758 he was listed as a witness to the will of John Sutton of Somerset County, New Jersey along with Joseph Pound and Adonijah Pound. Following that he does not again appear in the records and his life after that is unknown. It is unknown whether he was married although he may have had a wife named Ann as an Ann Pound is mentioned in the will of Sarah Robison in 1746. It is not known whether he had any children or not.

        8               iv.       Joseph Pound, born June 15, 1715 in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., New Jersey; died February 16, 1778 in Bernard's Town, Somerset Co., New Jersey.  He married Lydia ?; born 1711; died January 22, 1803 in Somerset Co., New Jersey.

 

Notes for Joseph Pound:

     Joseph Pound was born on June 25, 1715 in Piscataway, New Jersey but early in his life moved to Somerset County, where he was living when he sold 61 1/2 acres of land to John Sutton on May 14, 1747. He was one of the witnesses to the will of John Sutton of Somerset County on August 25, 1758 and one year later on June 30, 1759 was listed as having taken the inventory of the estate of Moses Doty of Somerset County, New Jersey. Later in life Joseph Pound lived in Bernards Town, Somerset County, New Jersey, where he died before February 16, 1778, leaving an intestate estate of 14 pounds, three shillings and four pence. Joseph Pound's first wife was named Eunice but nothing further is known of her. By the time of his death his wife was named Lydia. Her maiden name is also unknown. She died in Somerset County on January 22, 1803 at the age of 92. It is not known whether Joseph Pound had any children but several Pounds are mentioned in Revolutionary records and in Somerset County records who could be either children or grandchildren of his.

        5.  Thomas3 Pound (John2, John1) was born July 18, 1708 in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., New Jersey, and died May 01, 1758 in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., New Jersey.  He married Audrey ?

 

Notes for Thomas Pound:

     Thomas Pound was a farmer and plantation owner and lived in Piscataway all his life. He owned the 100-acre family farm, which he purchased from his father in 1736. He was listed as a freeholder in Piscataway in 1748, 1750 and 1752. On July 4, 1755 he signed the inventory of the estate of Benjamin Gross of Elizabeth, Essex County, New Jersey. He inherited his earmark to identify his cattle and sheep from his father. It was entered in his name on January 26, 1753. Thomas Pound died between May 1, 1758, when he wrote his will, and June 14, 1758, when his inventory was taken. He left an estate valued at 302 pounds, 17 shillings and seven pence. His eldest son inherited his property on which he lived while his younger son inherited somewhat more than 40 acres in, another area. His wife was named Audrey but her maiden name is not known. She survived him but the date of her death is not known.

        7.  Elijah3 Pound (John2, John1) was born July 08, 1712 in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., New Jersey, and died March 17, 1780 in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., New Jersey.  He married (1) Bathsheba FitzRandolf Abt. 1735 in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., New Jersey, daughter of David FitzRandolf and Sarah ?.  She was born 1719, and died March 05, 1742/43 in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., New Jersey.  He married (2) Elizabeth Smith Abt. 1744.  She was born April 11, 1719 in Woodbridge, Middlesex Co., New Jersey, and died October 09, 1793 in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., New Jersey.

 

Notes for Elijah Pound:

     On February 23, 1738 Elijah Pound purchased 48 1/2 acres of property in Piscataway from his father John Pound. On February 7, 1742 he bought 86 acres in Piscataway from Lawrence Reuth Jr. On February 7, 1746 he was listed as a bondsman in the estate of David Drake. Over the years he appeared numerous times as witness or taking inventories of various estates. In May 1757 Elijah Pound applied for membership in the Society of Friends and one month later was accepted. Most of his children also became members at the same time and for next 100 years most of his descendants were members of the Quaker church. In 1778 he was appointed to the committee for the relief of sufferers under laws against non-combatants appointed by the Friends but to avoid being jailed was allowed to resign from the committee. He died on March 17, 1780 in Piscataway, leaving an estate valued at 511 pounds, 17 shillings and three pence. Elijah first married about 1736 Bathsheba FitzRandolph, daughter of David and Sarah FitzRandolph. She was the mother of his first three sons but died at the age of 24 on March 5, 1743. Elijah married second Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Benjamin Smith and Sarah Shotwell, who was born in Woodbridge, New Jersey on April 11, 1719, on July 27, 1744. She was the widow of Samuel Laing. She survived him and died on October 9, 1793 in Piscataway.

        9.  John4 Pound (Thomas3, John2, John1) was born Abt. 1735 in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., New Jersey, and died Abt. 1790.  He married (1) Rhoda Cox Abt. 1759.    He married (2) Sarah Martin Abt. 1764. 

 

Notes for John Pound:

     John Pound was born about 1735 in Piscataway, New Jersey. As the eldest son of Thomas Pound, he inherited the 100-acre family farm when his father died in 1758 and lived there for about 15 years. He was granted the earmark to identify his livestock, which had been used by his father on February 23, 1764. He lived in Piscataway until at least July 12, 1770, when he sold his farm to Isaac Smalley. His earmark was later entered  to Benjamin Molleson on May 19, 1774. John left New Jersey some time after he sold his  property and went to Maryland, where he served in the Sixth Maryland Regiment in the Revolutionary War. According to family tradition he was in Maryland at least by October 1773. Following the Revolution and the opening of the Kentucky territory he moved with his family west to Nelson County, Kentucky about 1788 and settled there. He died in Kentucky some time between 1790 and 1800. His first wife, whom he married about 1759, was Rhoda Cox. About 1764 he married Sarah Martin, She survived him and by 1800 was married to a man named Stigler. She later married William Kester at an advanced age. The date of her death is not known.

I have a Sarah MARTIN (d/o Thomas MORETON & Elizabeth) Chr. 4 Mar 1738 in Newcastle, Staffordshire, England. - died 1825 in Elk Creek, Spencer Co, KY. Married John POUND (s/o Thomas POUND & Audry) b. 1735 in NJ. They married in 1764. She is also recorded as being married to a Mr. STIGLAR abt 1794 and William KESTER in 1813.

My line is through John POUND b. 1735 and Sarah MARTIN b. 1738 and their daughter Rebecca POUND b. 1776 in Middlesex Co, NJ. She married James STARK (s/o Christopher STARK & Martha VINEYARD/VINYARD) b. 10 May 1773 in PN. They married 22 Sep 1800 in Shelby Co, KY.

 

I also show a Rachel POUND (d/o John POUND & Esther DRAKE) b. 1717 Middlesex Co, NJ (Somerset Co. is right next to Middlesex) and married to a Joseph LAFORGE.

        13.  Isaac4 Pounds (Thomas3 Pound, John2, John1) was born Abt. 1745 in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., New Jersey.

 

Notes for Isaac Pounds:

     Isaac Pound(s) was born about 1750 in Piscataway, New Jersey and lived there until he was in his mid-thirties. After the death of his father he inherited about 40 acres of land and a sawmill and was also apprenticed to learn a trade. Isaac was granted an ear mark on November 20, 1776 by the Piscataway town clerk. He is listed as a taxpayer in Piscataway from 1780 to 1784, when he moved with his family to Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his family there after 1786 when he was listed in New Jersey as a witness to the will of Robert Webster. By 1810 he had moved west to Slippery Rock, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, where he spent the rest of his life. He died in Slippery Rock between 1820 and 1830.  His wife, whose name is unknown, survived him and lived until at least 1830. When he moved to Pennsylvania he changed his name to Pounds and all of his descendants carry that name.

     David Pound was a farmer and a lifelong resident of Piscataway, New Jersey. On March 18, 1760 he married Elizabeth Drake, daughter of George Drake of Piscataway, in the Piscataway Seventh Day Baptist Church. Later he became a member of the Quaker Church and remained a Quaker until his death on June 19, 1819 in Piscataway. He was buried in the Plainfield Friends Cemetery. At his death he left an estate valued at $412.25.

     Zachariah Pound lived most of his life in Westfield Town, Essex County, New Jersey, a few miles north of Piscataway. In addition he is listed as a taxpayer in Piscataway in 1820-1822, Warren Town, Somerset County in 1802 and 1807, Bernards Town, Somerset County from 1790 to 1802, and Bridgewater Town, Somerset County from 1796 to 1805. Zachariah was a member of the Friends Church, which he joined with his father in 1758.  He married Elizabeth Smith in Plainfield, New Jersey on January 21, 1761.  She was born in Woodbridge, New Jersey on September 26, 1744, the daughter of Shobal Smith. In 1760 he received property he was living on in Essex County as part of his legacy from his father. Zachariah died in Plainfield, New Jersey on May 19, 1822. His wife survived him and lived until October 23, 1831.

Notes for Benjamin Shotwell:

     Benjamin Shotwell married Bathsheba pound in the old Plainfield Friends Meeting House.  On March 11, 1783, he was elected by the town of Woodbridge, New Jersey as one of the surveyors of the roads for the coming year.  On August 15, 1787 he and Bathsheba received a certificate from Rahway and Plainfield Monthly Meeting to Kingwood Monthly Meeting of Friends.  Sometime after 1810 they removed from Warren Co., New Jersey to Seneca Co., New York.  According to Shotwell (page 93) he was a farmer and a consistent Friend.  His nephew William Shotwell was heard to say that when Benjamin visited his father's house he ate his dinner without removing his hat.  He was deaf for many years and in her later years Bathsheba went blind.

     Benjamin Pound lived in Piscataway until about 1769 when he and his family moved to Hardwick, New Jersey. On July 7, 1803 he received a certificate for transfer to Farmington, Ontario Co., New York from the Hardwick and Mendham Monthly Meeting in New Jersey and was accepted there on December 22, 1803. After 1810 he left Ontario County and moved to Erie County, New York near Buffalo, He had died by May 30, 1816 when a petition to probate his estate was filed in Niagara County, New York (later Erie Co.) Benjamin Pound married Elizabeth Laing, daughter of David and Mary (Thorne) Laing, on February 23, 1763 in Plainfield, New Jersey.

Notes for Daniel Pound:

     Daniel Pound grew up a Quaker and when the Revolution came did not fight in it.  In addition he had strong sympathies for the British cause and helped them during the war, particularly in Now York City. Following the Revolutionary War he returned to New Jersey and married Prudence Jones about 1783. By 1790 he had decided to emigrate to Canada and traveled  north to Bertie,  Ontario,  just  west of the Niagara Falls area where he spent the rest of his life. At that time there was no way to cross the Niagara River except to swim and Daniel Pound took his family across driving the horses across the river in front of him.

     On January 1, 1799, he requested membership for his seven children, Saray, William, Elijah, Elizabeth, David, John and Rachel in the Pelham Monthly Meeting of Friends.  He, his wife Prudence and son Daniel were already members.

     Samuel was a farmer and lawyer.  He moved from Galen, New York to East Oakfield, Genesee Co., New York, where he kept a saw mill and grist mill and owned the farm afterward homesteaded by Moses Vail.  He and Phebe became members of the Hartland MM of Friends by certificate from Junius MM dated April 28, 1824.  Shortly thereafter Phebe died and he married Mercy Pound.  Afdter 1832, he moved to Ottawa, Illinois, where he lived for many years.  While living there, he lost one arm in a sorghum grinder.

Benjamin Franklin Pound was born in Bridgeway, Canada and died at his home near Aumsvil le. He moved to New York in 1844 and joined the Oddfellows that year. He came to Oregon in 1891 where he made his home with his son Frank L., at Aumsville. He was born and raised a Quaker. He was the father of 9 children, 6 of whom survived him [not named]. [Obit in the Oregon Statesman 09 May 1896].

Benjamin Franklin Pound’s son, Frank L., was the husband of Elizabeth Winslow, whose parents are also in this lot. Frank Pound died in 1915 and is in City View Cemetery at Salem.

Notes for Elijah Pound:

     When his father died he inherited some property in Salt Meadow, Piscataway and lived there for many years. In 1784 he married Isabella Sharp, daughter of Langstaff Sharp of Piscataway. In October 1809 Elijah and his wife and family left New Jersey and moved Junius, Seneca County, New York, where he was received in the Farmington Monthly Meeting of Friends. While living in New York Elijah was a farmer. It was there that most of his children were married. Later about 1832 he moved west to Elk Town, Warren County, Pennsylvania, where several of his sons had moved in 1831. He and his wife were granted a certificate to the Rochester Monthly Meeting in 1835.  Elijah was active in the Quaker Church, appearing numerous times on various committees in the several meetings of which he was a member.
