From the History of Licking Co., Ohio:
You will not find many Pounds among the
rich and famous, neither should you expect to find them in the poorhouse or
the jail. Rather, they quietly go about the business of earning a living and
raising their families to be decent citizens. They have filled all kinds of
jobs since Joseph Pound and Elizabeth (Allison) Pound brought their family
from Orange County, New York, to Licking County, Ohio, in 1839. They have
been farmers, stock dealers, auctioneers, factory workers, office workers,
store owners and managers, florists, nurserymen, beauticians, photographers,
mechanics, carpenters, and craftsmen of many kinds. Their contributions to
public life have been in their own community on school boards or
in township and county offices or other
close-to-home services.
The Pound family joined forces with
another old Licking County family when Samuel A. Pound, son of Joseph and
Elizabeth, married Lucinda Wilkin. Lucinda's parents, Henry and Magdalena (Smootz)
Wilkin, came to Licking County from Virginia in October of 1816, following
their marriage in Virginia August 24, 1816, and were counted in the first
census of Ohio in 1820. Their children were born in Licking County.
Samuel and Lucinda were married probably
sometime around 1856 or 1857 since their first child, Alice Curdelia, was
born February 22, 1858. She and Emma Loretta were counted in the 1860
census. Alice died November 27, 1862 and one infant died in 1866. Samuel and
Lucinda and all the rest of their children are pictured in the accompanying
photograph (see the scrapbook), taken probably about June 1888. I will begin
at the left and tell a little about each one and hope the descendants of
each of them will write a more detailed account down to the present day.
(1) Mary Aribell who by that time was
Mrs. Byron Harris. "Arrie" as she was known was born December 5, 1863.
(2) If you look very closely you can see
tiny bonneted Minnie Pearl Harris sitting behind the pickets. She was the
first grandchild in the family, born November 29, 1885. She married Calvin
Lehman, had children Helen, Mary, and Earl. She died in 1957, her husband
Calvin in 1980.
I don't know why Byron Harris was not in
the picture. He was around for a long time after that and he and Arrie had
another daughter Eura Mae and a son William.
(3) Magdalena, usualy calle "Lena", born
December 9, 1865, married James Harvey Cochran August 18, 1898, died
September 20, 1900. Mr. Cochran died September 28, 1907. His obituary stated
that Magdalena and their only child Orie had preceded him in death, so they
have no descendants. They are buried at Smith Chapel Cemetery in Perry
Township. Inscription states that Orrie P. was born in 1900 and died 1901.
(4) William "Will". For a long time he
was a blacksmith in St. Louisville. Will was born in 1870 and died in 1943.
He married Louella Cliver. They had one infant who died at age two weeks and
a son Guy. Guy married Ruth Inlow, and had one son Donald who married
Frances Priest and had one daughter and three sons. Donald now lives in
Tennesse.
(5) Father Samuel A. Pound, born Orange
County, New York, August 28, 1830 and died in Licking County, February 8,
1895.
(6) Sara Louanda, usually called "Sade
or Sadie". She married Wesley Braden and they had two children, Chloa Dell
and Carl.
